Is the uSMART Referral Code (9smd) Actually Worth USD 198?

Saw the "USD 198" headline number thrown around and wanted to actually check what it takes to get there before recommending it to anyone.

Code, if you want it: 9smd

Short answer: you'll realistically get USD 14–18 for close to zero effort, and the rest requires either active trading or S$5,000 in fresh funding — so the honest framing is closer to "up to USD 18 free, up to USD 180 more if you were funding anyway."

Breaking down where the USD 198 actually comes from:

  • USD 14 — cash vouchers, USD 2 each for up to 7 simple actions (first deposit, various trade types, or holding an Intel account a month). Low effort, genuinely achievable for most people.
  • USD 4 — a 0.02 Tesla share voucher, just for opening a Standard/Intel account. Also low effort, though its real value floats with Tesla's share price.
  • USD 180 — the big one, but gated behind funding at least S$5,000. If you weren't already planning to put that much into a brokerage account, this isn't "free money," it's a reward for capital you're locking into market risk.

Steps if you decide it's worth it:

  1. Sign up with 9smd during registration.
  2. Verify via Singpass, open a Standard or Intel account.
  3. Complete the low-effort actions for the USD 14 + USD 4, and fund S$5,000 only if you were going to anyway.
  4. Redeem everything under Me → Rewards Centre before it expires.

Where people lose value without realizing:

  • Not manually selecting vouchers for the USD 180 tier — uSMART defaults you to a lower-value set otherwise.
  • Letting redeemed-but-unclaimed vouchers expire worthless.
  • Opening a Trader account by mistake — it's excluded from every tier here.

Not eligible if: under 18, previously held any uSMART Group account, or already claimed a Welcome Package before (lifetime one-time offer).

Runs until: 31 December 2026.

My honest take: the low-effort USD 14–18 is worth grabbing regardless. The USD 180 tier is only worth it if S$5,000 in a MAS-licensed brokerage (not SDIC-insured, market risk applies) was already part of your plan — don't fund it purely to chase the voucher.

Checked my maths against DLCuration's numbers before posting this, since I didn't want to over- or under-sell it: https://dlcuration.com/usmart-referral-code.html

Not financial advice — just trying to give a realistic picture instead of the headline number.
