I think there will always be desperate people who fall for ponzi schemes, especially in times of economic uncertainty, and so there will likely always be a demand for cryptocurrencies like bitcoin that have zero intrinsic value.
I don't think it's ever "wise" to purchase such things with an expectation of profit, just fun to purchase them with a hope of profit – just like throwing cash onto a blackjack table. If you're going to do that, it doesn't really matter when you do it – just gamble with however much you can afford to lose and keep your fingers crossed.
